Reading the city
Every visual has a declared job.
The city is expressive, but its mappings are deliberately constrained. This page explains what each signal means—and what it does not mean.
Projects and market groups
Live project membership comes from CoinGecko's paginated market and category feeds. Stablecoins and wrapped tokens are excluded using provider categories. Category membership is never inferred from a name or ticker.
Ranked views cover Top 10–250 eligible projects. The Overall market also offers Total, which appends repository-curated CoinGecko IDs and orders them by provider rank. These additions never imply category membership.
Project visual mappings
- Market cap
- Fixed logarithmic scale for territory radius, landmark height, and skyline density.
- 24h volume
- Number of cars owned by and circulating around that project's district.
- Activity
- Car speed, labeled by metric kind, unit, source, capture time, and confidence.
- Turnover
- Drone activity, calculated from 24h volume divided by market cap.
- Price change
- Red, neutral, or green district heat for the selected 1h, 24h, or 7d timeframe.
- Large moves
- Construction and coin activity above +5%; warning, fire, and smoke below −5%, with hysteresis.
CoinGecko project activity currently uses a clearly labeled trading-volume proxy measured as USD volume per minute. It is not described as on-chain transactions.
Exchange mode
Exchange mode shows CoinGecko's Trust Top 50 active spot exchanges. BTC-denominated 24-hour volume is converted using CoinGecko's BTC/USD exchange rate. Users may order the city by current volume or CoinGecko rank; tower and territory scale continue to represent volume in both orders.
CoinGecko Trust Score and rank are comparative provider signals—not safety guarantees, endorsements, solvency checks, or custody assessments.
Until shared exchange history exists, exchange mode has no timeframe heat, movers, or gain/loss construction and damage effects.
Freshness, simulation, and news
- Market refresh
- Server-cached no faster than once per minute; stale browser snapshots may remain available for 24 hours.
- Project details
- Fetched only after explicit selection and cached for 24 hours.
- Simulation
- Deterministic fixtures emitted through the normal market contract and always labeled.
- News
- One server-published seven-day snapshot shared by all visitors from fixed RSS/Atom sources.
Roads between adjacent districts are neutral infrastructure. They do not encode trading pairs, ecosystems, correlations, bridges, capital movement, or on-chain flows.
Known limitations
Provider coverage, classification, ranking, exchange-reported volume, network conditions, and browser performance can affect what appears. Visual contrast curves improve readability, so object counts and physical dimensions are not literal financial quantities.
CryptoCity displays capture times and stale states where available and never silently replaces failed live data with simulation.
